Nearly 300 members of the BWH family—donors, trustees and hospital leaders—gathered Saturday night to celebrate the successful conclusion of the hospital’s capital campaign, “Great Medicine in the Making.” Originally planned as a seven-year, $200-million fundraising effort, the campaign came to a close earlier than expected and substantially surpassed its goal with a final tally of $218,621,061.
“While we believed that such a lofty goal was achievable, we did not anticipate that we would surpass it by nearly $20 million and do so a year ahead of schedule,” said Surgery Chairman Michael Zinner, MD, who co-chaired the campaign that began in 1998 with trustee Gretchen Fish.
After thanking guests for their remarkable philanthropic support, BWH President Gary Gottlieb announced a $5 million gift from Eileen and Jack Connors Jr. and their family. The Connors, who kicked off the campaign with a $5 million gift, pledged this additional gift to continue to support women’s health programs. Chairman of the Board of Partners HealthCare System, Jack Connors served as chairman of the BWH Board from 1992 to 1996. The Mary Horrigan Connors Center for Women’s Health bears his mother’s name.
Campaign contributions, said Zinner and Gottlieb, have transformed BWH. For example, clinical facilities have been renovated and advanced technologies have been installed in operating rooms, intensive care units and imaging suites.
“BWH is truly blessed by your commitment and kindness,” Gottlieb told benefactors.
